New Delhi: The appointment of visas at US embassies and consulates have temporarily been suspended by the Donald Trump administration, leaving thousands of people stuck in queues to apply for visas to cross borders or immigrate to the United States. The delay is dated to the new program, which involves teaching consular officers around the world, according to the US State Department, but, the State Department says, it coincides with a much tougher stance of the Trump administration on immigration.
Why has the US paused visa appointments?
The U.S. State Department is providing extra training to South African consular officials to enable them to conduct more thorough screening of those seeking visas for the U.S. The training is likely to be centred around determining applicants’ risk of becoming reliant on public subsidies in the US.
In connection with this, the US Embassy or Consulate in your country will be adjusting visa appointments. The government has not provided a definite timeline for when regular interviews will resume, but some applicants already have been notified their interviews will be cancelled or rescheduled.
This is not a ‘forever visa ban’. Rather, it is a brief respite which is associated with training and a comprehensive evaluation of the process by which applications are assessed.
What is Trump actually trying to do?
The bigger picture is important. One of Trump’s top priorities in his second administration is immigration control. His administration has adopted more stringent visa screening processes, raised visa fees and implemented new restrictions and has noted that it will be more aggressive at revoking visas in some situations.
The fundamental idea behind the administration’s approach is that the individuals that enter into the US must undergo thorough vetting to ensure they comply with immigration regulations of this country, don’t pose security threats and are not likely to be a financial drain on the government.
Additionally, Trump has attacked policies he says are exerting pressure on U.S. workers and public systems that he believes are in the name of immigration. His administration has thus been on a path to introduce stringent measures before granting permission to travel to the country, involving more detailed checks. It has been already done to skilled worker, student, visitor and immigrant visa programmes.
What does this mean for applicants?
One of the first things visitors will experience when they have to wait for a US visa interview is delays and uncertainty. If an applicant’s appointment is cancelled, he/she may have to wait for a new date. The State Department hasn’t issued a clear global schedule for the return of the normal appointment system.
The development is significant for Indian students as the United States is a major country for skilled professionals, families, business travellers and students from India. Yet, it is not to be taken for granted that all types of visas for the United States have been canceled.
The new rollout demonstrates that Trump’s immigration plan is shifting toward increased screening and security, as well as increased control and fewer opportunities for anyone officials think might pose a security or economic or immigration problem. The visa appointment scheduling pause is thus temporary, but it also serves as a sign that tougher scrutiny is expected to stay much of Trump’s immigration policy.
