New Delhi: India is set to host the next BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit, and Russia is hoping it will help resolve differences between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it reports. Both the countries had trouble by reaching a common ground on a joint statement due to the tension in West Asia between them.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has voiced this hope to the reporters. He also stated that the meetings to prepare for the summit have been influenced by the differences between Iran and the UAE. Due to these differences, the final declaration of all countries is proving to be more difficult than usual.
However, Peskov said that Russia is willing to help Iran and the UAE develop their relationship. He also added that one important thing that Russia and India agree on is that BRICS should not be interpreted as a bloc that is against the West. This commonality in understanding, he said, might be useful for the two countries to collaborate in dealing with the issues between the others.
The summits of BRICS will be held in Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to attend, according to Iranian officials.
There are currently 5 countries that make up BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In the last two years, it has expanded to incorporate newer players like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE. The expansion has been significant too, as BRICS now has a stronger voice on the international stage, but its growth has also led to some new conflicts: as its members each have a different political relationship to one another, and they have different priorities.
The competition between the UAE and Iran is tied to that of the larger West Asian conflict, in which Iran has been their chief adversary while the UAE has been the one in closer proximity to the United States and Israel. This gap was already observed in previous BRICS summits, with a conflict in May 2026, for instance, where leaders could not agree on a joint statement to guarantee it would be included in the attendees’ documents.
With these tensions remaining in the group, all eyes will be on whether the group can concoct something up in this summit in India this year.
