Dubai, February 17: The first Global Tourism Resilience Day was launched at Expo 2020 Dubai on 17 February by Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and Co-Chair of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC). The launch coincided with Jamaica’s Expo 2020 Dubai National Day.
The annual day showcased the need for the travel industry to focus on preparedness, crisis management, recovery and ongoing resilience.
To mark the first Global Tourism Resilience Day launch, GTRCMC has partnered with the Global Travel and Tourism Resilience Council and the International Tourism Investment Corporation to organise an in-depth forum on resilience at the DP World Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai from 1300-1900 on 17 February.
At the forum, high-level international and regional speakers shared ideas on investment that leads to resilience, including Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica; Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya; Reyes Morato, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, Spain; Nayef Al Fayez, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Jordan; Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman, Sandals Resorts International; Julia Simpson, CEO, World Travel and Tourism Council; and Liz Ortiguera, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association.
Edmund Bartlett, the Jamaican Minister of Tourism, said, “We’re really in an emergency now in terms of being able to cope with the global climate crisis and the many other disaster threats and challenges. It affects every individual, no matter which part of the world, more than any other issue we currently face. What we need to talk about is preparing for a new normal.”
