New Delhi: A big disaster occurred in Vadodara district, portions of the Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River collapsed, at least six people were injured, and nine people died in this collapse. Vododara SP (Rural) Rohan Anand confirmed the deaths. Anand MP Mitesh Patel said three bodies have been recovered and four persons have been rescued so far. Rescue operations are still underway. They are being carried out by district officials of both Vadodara and Anand districts, he stated.
The incident occurred on the Padra-Mujpur stretch, a key connector between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, resulting in an intensive rescue operation by the authorities. According to some sources, a truck, a van, and a car were crossing the bridge when it gave way, causing the vehicles to plunge into the river below.
Soon after the collapse, locals rushed to the scene and alerted emergency services. Police teams and disaster response units arrived at the scene and initiated rescue efforts to extract those trapped in the wreckage. Fire brigade officials said that the incident occurred around 7:30 AM.
The portion of the bridge collapsed suddenly, and three vehicles that were passing over the stretch fell into the river below. Initiated rescue operations and 10 have been pulled out of the river, said the fire brigade officer. The collapsed bridge is located around 25 KM from Vodadra city and serves as a vital route for transport vehicles travelling towards Saurashtra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that the loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Vadodara district, Gujarat, is deeply saddening, announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to those who are injured.
On the other hand, Gujarat’s CM Bhupendra Patel shared on X (formely twitter) stating, Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, during his foreign visit, held a telephonic conversation with me to obtain complete details about the accident that occured at the Gambhira Bridge connecting Anand-Vadodara and expressed condolences for the deceased who lost their lives in this accident.
He also expressed concern for the treatment of those injured in this accident and obtained information regarding the treatment arrangements. The Prime Minister also gathered details about the rescue and relief operations undertaken by the state government, he added on the X post.
