New Delhi: The recent news of Ashok Kumar Mittal leaving the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in addition to Raghav Chadha, has elicited debate in the political and academic realms. Although it is yet to be closely observed, it has already become a topic of discussion, particularly in the student community of Lovely Professional University (LPU).
Ashok Mittal, the Founder Chancellor of LPU, has been very much linked with the growth and reputation of the institution. His political activity had previously received divided attention with some students viewing it as a move towards gaining wider power, others were still wary of striking a balance between educational leadership and political undertakings.
It is not true to state categorically that LPU students will trust Ashok Kumar Mittal, simply because of his alleged quitting of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with Raghav Chadha. The trust does not switch overnight with a single political act.
We can reasonably say, however, this: the development will increase the perception of some students. A part of students will tend to interpret his resignation as an indication that he may concentrate on his job at Lovely Professional University. That may provide a feeling of relief, particularly to those who like to keep their university leadership out of the active politics.
Simultaneously, he will not necessarily be trusted by all students again. Many will reserve judgment until they observe some consistent efforts, such as more vigorous academic effort, campus renovation, or decisions that put the student first.
After the news of his supposed exit out of AAP surfaced, a section of LPU students seems to be reevaluating their view about Mittal. To a great number, this action is seen as returning to concentrating on his educational duties. This is a good sign to students who appreciate stability in leadership as they feel that this might make Mittal more dedicated to the growth of the university.
Simultaneously, some students are more sceptical and argue that political affiliations tend to incline the decisions of the public figures in more complicated ways. To them, trust does not involve a one-time choice but rather a course of action in the long-term.
In general, the scenario has spawned a wider debate at LPU concerning leadership, accountability, and priorities. The answer to the question of whether this development will increase student trust in Ashok Mittal will probably be determined by how his future behaviors will be consistent with those of the expectations of the university community.
