NEET Aspirants left helpless after exam cancellation: What comes next?

New Delhi: Cracking NEET-UG 2026 exam was the dream of thousands of Indian medical aspirants and their sudden shock when the exam was cancelled has caused their uncertainty about the future. The allegations of paper leakage in the exam in many states led to the cancellation of the exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The decision has impacted over 22 lakh students who had appeared for the exam on 3rd May.

NEET is India’s largest medical entrance exam required to secure admission to MBBS and other undergraduate medical courses in India. For many students, it’s years of effort, coaching, sacrifice of money and emotional stress. Now, with this exams are being canceled so abruptly, students have to prepare for exams again, and fresh dates are yet to be announced.

Several candidates commented that on hearing this announcement they felt very helpless. What is happening to students that prepared for a months’ worth of examination is now experiencing anxiety, frustration and exhaustion? News of students’ mental anguish over the re-test is coming from various parts of the country.

The reason for the cancellation of the exam, according to the NTA, was the evidence received by investigative agencies that question papers leaked before the examination. Some “guess papers” were found to have “the same number of questions with the same answers” in the real paper, said officials. The government has now issued an order for an investigation by the CBI into the issue.

The controversy also has led to serious doubts about the validity of the examination structure. The official has faced criticism from education professionals and students for not taking adequate steps to stop the incidents of paper leaking. There have been previous years when NEET has been protested over, and many students have lost faith in the system.

Parents are also concerned. lakhs of rupees are invested in coaching, travel, and study material by many families to help their children in preparation for NEET. The cancellation carries bigger financial burden on those who go to coaching hubs such as Kota or do drop year classes and have come for this exam.

In the meantime, Government has stated that NEET is to be computer-based, from next year, to increase security and minimise the risk of paper leakage. In addition, students are now made aware that they will themselves not have to go through re-registration and pay extra fee for the re-exam.

They want stronger enhancements, more transparency and rigorous new exams on new dates, as they await. Presently lakhs of aspirants are unable to take a break from protest and are much more busy in preparing next exam until they get a better opportunity to make their hard work count.
