New Delhi: The internet is a viral buzz with the speculations on the newest viral social media phenomenon, ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ (CJP), which is suddenly making headlines every social media platforms. It further took off after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav added a short but pungent ‘BJP vs CJP’ on his Twitter.
Though Akhilesh did not explain the meaning behind his post, many social media users saw it as a political jibe at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The declaration was picked up by the media and soon the so-called Cockroach Janta Party became more and more popular.
The Cockroach Janta Party is no real political party. It began as an online satirical movement, following the creation of an account in early June that made comments about the youth, comparing them to “cockroaches” when they went to court. The comment brought online attention to the controversy, particularly from the youth community, and within days, meme makers and social media users latched onto to the controversy, creating a digital protest movement.
In a matter of days, the movement went viral on social media such as Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). In a few days, CJP’s Instagram page reportedly joined the million-follower club and even surpassed the fans of the BJP’s official Instagram account.
The movement has primarily been embraced by Gen Z users and young jobless people who are voicing their frustrations over politics, unemployment and social issues through sentiment, memes and satire. The team dubs itself ‘Voice of Lazy and Unemployed’ and posts humorous but political content which resonates with young audiences online.
There are also several political leaders who are eyeing the trend. In a reaction to the viral campaign online, leaders from the All India Trinamool Congress earlier spoke to the effect. Earlier, leaders from the All India Trinamool Congress had reacted saying that the campaign had gone viral.
A strange but highly engaging online political battle also seems to be underway, with another satirical online group being the “National Parasitic Front.” Such viral acts are perceived as a quickening political vocabulary in India, specifically with the youth who are more active on social media and more fond at humor and digital activism over political debates.
In the interim, the furor has continued. India has suspended the Cockroach Janta Party’s Twitter account, reports said on Thursday. The founding member of the group confirmed the action online and said that there were rumors of it being expected.
While it was satire, its popularity is immense, and clearly demonstrates the influence of social media in today’s political dialogue. As politicians, they are responding to memes on the internet and online campaigns, making it more and more difficult to distinguish between the serious and the satirical.
The “BJP vs CJP” debate has continued vibrantly online with memes, discussion and political reactions spreading across social media platforms in the country.
