New Delhi: The latest social media craze is one that has just come into existence, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), and it’s now a huge Instagram phenomenon. The page quickly amassed millions of followers and swaggered past the BJP’s official Instagram page, popularly known as Bharatiya Janata Party, in a span of mere days. Many people have been taken aback by CJP’s emergence, and began a wide online discussion about it.
The movement has been inspired by a controversial statement that equated unemployed youth with ‘cockroaches’. Many youngsters were upset with the comment on social media. Users began creating memes, hilarious edits and satirical posts with the word “cockroach” rather than just getting angry. Gradually, the idea evolved into a viral online movement and eventually came to be known as the Cockroach Janta Party.
The page was allegedly made by former member of Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP’s social media team Abhijeet Dipke. Today, though, CJP is more of a satire of the youth movement than a political party. Though it doesn’t officially contest elections, it has become so popular online that no one can ignore it.
CJP’s rapid expansion is partly due to its approach with social media. CJP’s page is not as political but rather is dominated by memes, short clips, and relatable jokes, with the exception of speeches, press conferences and other campaign updates. Its content is primarily produced in a manner that immediately resonates with the Gen Z target audience.
It is generally centres its articles on topics such as unemployment, exam paper leaks, increasing competition for employment, and young people’s disillusionment. Many of those who got to the page began posting there because they felt their page was talking about issues that touched their lives personally. This enabled the account to rapidly be founded over a brief period of time.
What is also clear from the trend, according to social media experts, is the shift in political conversations in India. Political campaigns relied primarily on the rally, television debates and newspaper advertising in the past. Nowadays, however, Instagram reels and memes are emerging as effective weapons to draw in the young market. The mark of CJP’s success is that the internet can generate political excitement much quicker than old fashion campaigning methods.
Meanwhile, the spread of virus has caused confusion on the internet. Akhilesh Yadav’s entry into the Cockroach Janta Party began to be prominently spoken about by many social media users. There’s no official confirmation of this at the moment though. The majority of these posts seem to be Jokes, Photo Manipulations, or rumours spread through the internet for the sake of entertainment and engagement.

While many are sharing the memes, others think there is a real message behind the trend. CJP supporters claim it is bringing laughter and satire to the lives of frustrated youngsters. But critics have their doubts that it’s anything but smart social media marketing to get attention and followers.
Internet culture has emerged as an important force in India’s political sphere, with the number of pages dedicated to the subject increasing sharply, according to political analysts. For today’s younger generations, short content and humorous messages are better at resonating than long political speeches. That is why sometimes meme pages on the internet are more popular than official political pages.
It remains to be seen whether or not Cockroach Janta Party will grow into a genuine political entity in the future or stay as a viral Internet movement. One thing is clear, however: in our digital world, social media can change the trajectory of conversations and the attention paid to an issue in an instant, as CJP has proven.
