New Delhi: YouTube has recently announced that they have launched its latest Timer feature to help users manage how much time they are spending scrolling through the Shorts. According to some sources, the latest features enable users to set daily limits for watching Shorts on the mobile application. Once the set time is reached, YouTube automatically pauses the Shorts feeds and displays a message notifying users that their scrolling limit has been reached for the day, and this type of feature is seen on Instagram, where you can set a timer, and after that, Instagram automatically stops the Reels feed.
The idea behind this feature is to help those users who avoid the endless scrolling, a common habit where viewers open one short clip and end up watching for hours. YouTube has said that the Short Timer aims to encourage mindful screen habits while giving users more control over their time on the platform. The move comes with the aim of rising public pressure on the tech companies to address digital well-being and screen-time fatigue.
The platform already includes the take a break reminders, which prompt users to pause after 15, 30, 60, or 90 minutes of continuous viewing, and a bedtime reminder that notifies them when it’s time to stop watching and sleep. These prompts can be dismissed or ignored by the users, just like Instagram offers to the users, where they can dismiss that pop-up notification in-app.
Currently, Timers works only for individual users who set it and is not yet linked with parental controls, which means parents cannot use it to manage their children’s viewing time for now. YouTube plans to expand the feature with parental control support later this year. Once that update rollout, parents will be able to set the viewing limits for their children’s Shorts feed, and the timer prompt will be non-dismissible.
