Xiaomi 18 Fold vs Galaxy Z Fold8: How Xiaomi could challenge Samsung in the global foldable market

New Delhi: With this, Xiaomi is gearing up to go into the next big fight in the foldable smartphone arena. The company has announced that its new Xiaomi 18 Fold will be available in September 2026 and one of the highlights of the device is Xiaomi’s new in-house Xring O3 processor. It provides Xiaomi with a good hand to beat Samsung’s top-performing Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has already found itself a flagship foldable device on the market.

Xring O3 could be Xiaomi’s biggest advantage

The biggest difference between the two phones could be their processors. Built on Xiaomi’s 3nm-processed design, Xiaomi’s Xring O3 is made using the company’s technology. The company calls it a high-end flagship chip which it aims to compete with Qualcomm’s latest processors.

This might help Xiaomi to better regulate and manage the performance, save power consumption and add AI functionality. With the Xiaomi’s latest Xring O3 impressive real-world performance, Xiaomi 18 Fold might going to be a viable contender to the Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8.

The Galaxy Z Fold8, on the other hand, is running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The phone will come with Android 17 and a cover screen of 5.5-inch and an inner screen of 7.6-inch with One UI 9.

A wider design could attract more users

Xiaomi seems to be deviating from the conventional foldable structure too. A lot has been said about the Xiaomi 18 Fold’s design being wider and shorter, instead of being tall and narrow like many of its predecessors. Interestingly, Samsung have also shifted the Galaxy Z Fold8 design in the direction of a larger, more comfortable case.

This indicates that Xiaomi will not just be based on specifications. It will face Samsung head-on when it comes to usability, screen shape and, overall, its design.

Xiaomi could win on price

Price may turn out to be Xiaomi’s key advantage in the international markets. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 is priced at approximately $1,899 in several regions, which makes it a fairly high-priced smartphone. If Xiaomi can have any of the things that Samsung has, but can do so at a lower price, it will hopefully draw in customers who are looking for a foldable phone, but don’t want to pay Samsung rates.

But one thing has to be considered: its availability on a global level. It is now reported that the Xiaomi 18 Fold will most likely be initially available in China only. Xiaomi has to come out with a cheap pricing point and robust after-sales service in its major markets like India, Europe, if it wished to truly challenge Samsung on the global market.

Can Xiaomi actually beat Samsung?

Xiaomi 18 Fold could compete with Galaxy Z Fold8 in terms of new Xring O3 chipset, the wider design, and the likely competitive price tag. However, Samsung’s domination will not be achieved by their strong gadgets all over the world.

Samsung already has a good reputation in the foldable space, broad availability in the market, ripened software and a substantial service network. Xiaomi will have to be as strong as they are and do better.

If Xiaomi has hit the pricing and global release target, then the Xiaomi 18 Fold might go on to really challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 on the foldables front.
