New Delhi: X is now gearing up to unveil its latest standalone messaging app called XChat for iPhone and iPad users. This application is now available for pre-order on the App Store, and it is expected to go live on April 25, after an earlier expected release on April 17.
This move now signals a shift from X’s existing in-app direct messaging system to a separate dedicated platform aimed at private conversations. XChat is specially designed to let users chat with anyone on X in a private, dedicated space built for conversation.
This application will not include ads or tracking, and it will offer end-to-end encrypted messaging, which generally means only the sender and receiver can read the messages. XChat is expected to include some features that are commonly found in modern messaging applications.
It also adds end-to-end encryption specially designed to keep the conversations secure from third parties. Users will also be able to edit and delete messages even after sending them. Deleting a message removes it for everyone in the chat, offering the users more control over what remains in the conversations.
XChat will include a screenshot blocking feature, which will prevent others from capturing chats. Users can allow messages to disappear automatically within 5 minutes, making it easier to share temporary or sensitive information. It also supports large group chats, with up to 481 members initially.
It will also enable cross-device calling by extending its functionality beyond text messaging to include voice and video communication.
X also plans to discontinue Communities on May 6 due to declining usage. Users are being encouraged to move to XChat by sharing group chat links. X also stated that the users will have until May 30 to complete the transition.
The changes are part of the broader effort to simplify its platform while aiming more at niche communities via the latest feature, like Custom Timelines.
