Why Qualcomm skipped Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and jumped to Gen 5

New Delhi: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series chipsets perform much better in every smartphone brand, and users give all love to the Qualcomm chipset. Now, for gaming, many users only find the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset in Android devices. Every top-of-the-line Android flagship has packed the 8-series processor in recent years. However, the users were left confused by Qualcomm’s latest name for its upcoming flagship chipset. In 2024, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite as a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The company promised significant gains with the processor, and this gave the latest SoC the Elite tag.

This year, it was widely expected that the latest flagship processor would be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, but ahead of the 2025 Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm has revealed that the latest chipset will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The company provided a detailed explanation on its website, perhaps expecting some confusion online. Qualcomm also stated that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of their premium eight series platforms since they introduced their latest single-digit naming and the visual identity.

The company has also clarified that the number 5 in the name did not mean it was skipping three generations with the latest flagship chipset. Instead, the 8 Elite Gen 5 name was meant to symbolize the fifth-generation 8-series processor. The original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was released in November 2021, when the company adopted its latest naming scheme, which extends across its smartphone chipsets. Qualcomm also indicated that the Elite tag will remain this year due to the processor performance. The Elite name is reserved for their most industry-leading products.
