Why iPhone photos look clearer than Android photos on apps like Instagram and Snapchat

New Delhi: Have you ever noticed that the same photo from an iPhone and share it on Instagram and Snapchat or an Android phone and share the same photo there? The beauty and clarity of the photo may appear fine on the iPhone but garbled on the Android phone, even if the camera system specs are better on the Android phone. It’s not in your head and it’s not really about which phone is a “better” photographer. Actually, what these applications make of your camera is really the sign of two different approaches from Apple and Google.

The Screenshot trick

The reason is part of one of the largest of them all: the number of Android applications that take your photo. Rather than accessing the phone’s native camera apparatus, Instagram and Snapchat users have increasingly snapped “screenshots” of what they are seeing on the screen when they press the shutter button. If you open a story or attempt to take a picture or video using Instagram (Android version), the app displays what you’re seeing, it’s not the device camera taking that picture or video, and a shutter button does not take a picture or video, it just takes a screen shot of the screen. Snapchat has leveraged the same trick. Snapchat does not use the device’s camera to take pictures, instead it is often a screenshot or screen grab of the camera view.

This is a shortcut that bypasses all the smart image manipulation/processing which your phone’s real camera does, eliminating sharpness and detail before they have a chance to be saved.

Too many different phones to deal with

So why would the app makers do this? Credit the plethora of Android phones available. The company releases just a few iPhone models every year, allowing the developers to optimize their camera code for the respective models. But Android’s a whole other matter. Since there is so much variation among the Android devices on the market, each one running a different version of software, the Snapchat developers were unable to optimize for all Android phones, and created a sort of compromise to make software work in a similar manner across devices, albeit with a slight downside when it comes to image quality.

To simplify, it’s a huge endeavor to build camera connections for thousands of phone models, chips and camera sensors. So easier to assure the same appearance of the viewfinder throughout every use, with a lesser level of quality.

It’s not just a broken shortcut and it’s also how the photo is built

There’s more to this, too. Heavy “computational photography” features are embedded in all Apple iPhones, and third-party apps have access to the same pipeline via Apple’s camera software tools. Smart HDR does more than simply brighten up a photo overall, it can correct brightness by separating images into faces, skies and backgrounds. The other one, known as Deep Fusion, combines several frames shot one by one to enhance the texture with reduced noise particularly in medium lighting pixel by pixel. This has the effect of being performed automatically on each iPhone a feature that works for third-party applications without the developer having to create anything of his own.

Android phones, however, tend to be higher in megapixels and have howling levels of sharpening and/or contrast added by the individual phone maker’s camera software. This may look punchy in the phone camera app, but isn’t always the best solution when using an app such as Instagram, and the camera app is not that camera app, but rather a screen capture.

Real users are noticing the gap

It’s not a theory people online compare notes all the time. One Instagram user who shared a video from his iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra said the app ‘destroys’ the video from the Samsung phone, although Instagram videos from the Samsung phone tend to have far better quality when originally recorded on the device. Even Samsung’s newer flagship devices have been reported to experience the same problems, such as the Galaxy S24 and S25.

Things are slowly getting better

The chasm does not stand for eternity. Google has been advancing a tool called CameraX that will provide developers with a more accessible and standardized approach to integrating a device’s real camera with applications, rather than by screen recording. Other manufacturers such as Samsung have also made direct downloads of third-party apps such as Instagram, with a view to enhancing the image-capture integration. Android phones, such as the older Google Pixel 2, have been able to circumvent the screenshot workaround all together.

Yet, Apple’s offering remains as consistent from one phone to another of a handful of models, so the typical iPhone owner is more likely to obtain a good print from a third-party application these days. Android is working on catching up, but it will take the cooperation of individual phone manufacturers and app developers to implement the update, device by device.
