New Delhi: Facebook and Google services have been restored following a brief outage on March 5th. Well, we all are aware of it but the question is What exactly happened? Why the tech giants faced this issue despite being at the top of the industry?

The Real reason behind the outage:

The network outage issue impacting various Google and Meta applications was detected at approximately 9 p.m., according to Down Detector, a network outage monitoring platform.

During the outage, users experienced difficulties loading the apps, sending messages, and refreshing their search feeds on both Facebook and Instagram. Many users were also unexpectedly logged out of their profiles. Additionally, YouTube experienced similar issues shortly.

Meta has acknowledged the widespread difficulties affecting their platforms and has reassured users that they are actively engaged in resolving the issue.

An error message such as ‘Log in again; session expired; couldn’t refresh feed’ on Facebook and Instagram apps. Downdetector.com, a website tracking outages, reported tens of thousands of outage reports for both platforms.

At its peak, there were over 300,000 outage reports for Facebook and more than 20,000 for Instagram. Meta’s status dashboard indicated issues with WhatsApp Business API as well, with around 200 outage reports on Downdetector.

Google’s own YouTube also resumed its services after encountering a short outage.

What is a Network Outage?

A network outage occurs when there’s a disruption in the connection between your computer and a server, making the server temporarily inaccessible. Unlike server issues, this problem doesn’t originate from the server itself but rather from issues in the internet connection along the way. These outages are often caused by routing issues beyond the control of third-party monitoring.

What others say’s about it:

During the outage, users turned to alternative social networks, such as X, WhatsApp, and other online platforms, to report connectivity issues with Google and Meta-owned platforms.

“We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X social media.

In a later post after solving the problem, Stone said that the issue was fixed.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Stone said.

Elon Musk, on the other hand, started suing Meta and Google for their poor server connection. He wrote on X, “If you’re reading this post, it’s just because our servers are working.”

The disruption affected users in India and various parts of the world.
