New Delhi: WhatsApp has recently started experimenting with the latest username feature that might change how people connect on the platform. This upcoming upgrade will also enable users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers, which offers more privacy to users.
Once it is available, the users will be able to share their latest unique username rather than their personal numbers to start a conversation on WhatsApp itself.
This feature appears in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.1.10.70 upgrade. Those usernames will offer the users greater control over their sensitive data, especially their personal numbers. It means that the users can now interact with the latest contacts without exposing sensitive details, while still messaging on WhatsApp.
Once these features become available for the users, then they can check their availability by heading to their profile settings.
They will also be going to see the latest option to set up a username. The setup process is especially designed to be simple, by guiding the users step by step. And after choosing the unique username, it will be linked to their account and can be shared with others rather than their personal number.
And for choosing the username, it must be available across the Meta platforms. This generally means that for the users, the username should not already be taken on Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp. And if it is available everywhere and meets the rules, the users can claim it instantly.
If the username is already in use on Instagram or Facebook, the users will be asked to verify that they own it.
This verification is done via its Account Center, where the users can link their accounts and confirm ownership. Once it’s been verified, they can also use the same username on WhatsApp. If the username belongs to someone else on Facebook or Instagram, it cannot be claimed on WhatsApp.
