New Delhi: Vivo has put a mixed reality headset in front of Indian audiences for the first time. The company showed the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition at its Vivo NEXT event on October 6, and it’s the brand’s first move into spatial computing here.
The numbers come first. The headset weighs 398 grams, which Vivo calls ultra light. It runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform and uses 8K dual binocular Micro-OLED displays. Navigation is by eye and hand tracking, so there’s no controller to hold.
Comfort is where Vivo seems to have put real effort. The company says it did extensive human factors research, and the result is four sizes of light seal and eight foam padding options. Optional lenses are also going to available for the people who’d rather not wear any spectacles under the headset. Anyone who has worn a heavy headset for an hour will understand why that matters.
The demo itself leans on the entertainment and gaming. Users can also watch films on a virtual theatre screen Vivo puts at 120 feet, move through 360-degree environments, look at the spatial images with the depth, and play mixed reality games that sit inside the actual room. Spatial audio and multiple windows open side by side are part of the pitch too.
That last point is what separates mixed reality from a standard VR headset. Digital content gets layered over your real surroundings instead of replacing them. Vivo’s argument is that this makes the experience feel more connected to where you are.
The access arrangement is a bit unusual. Buyers of the Vivo X Fold6 get priority walk-in access to try the headset, and they need to show a pre-order or purchase invoice, or just bring the phone. The experience zones are at 15 exclusive Vivo stores across 10 cities: Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Indore, Dehradun, Delhi, Patna, Kolkata, Nagpur and Mumbai. The offer runs until January 5, 2027, covering the first three months of the X Fold6 launch. Vivo adds that availability depends on the store.
Now the gaps. This official announcement by the company doesn’t mention any of the pricing details, and it doesn’t say when the headset might go on sale in India or whether it will at all. The footnotes describe the program as promotional only, not a commercial guarantee to sell. The “Discovery Edition” name also hints at an early-stage product more than a finished retail one.
So this reads as a showcase, not a launch. For Vivo, it’s a way to let people get hands-on with a new category and tie it to its foldable. Whether it turns into something you can buy is a question the company hasn’t answered yet.
