Tesla is all set to unveil its first showroom in India; whats next?

New Delhi: Tesla is finally here, after years of rumors and talks, the world’s most famous electric car company is making its official entry into India. Tesla will open its showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025, which is said to be called an experience centre, and it’s coming up at the in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a business and retail area near Mumbai Airport.

What’s so special about the showroom?

Tesla’s Mumbai experience centre will allow people to explore the brand, check out car models, compare prices, and even customize and order their own Tesla. For the first week, only VIPs and business guests will be allowed. After that, regular people can visit too.

This new centre shows that Tesla is finally getting serious about India. The company signed a lease for this space back in March 2025. Since then, they’ve been hiring more staff and looking for more showroom locations in both Mumbai and Delhi. Rumor has it that a second showroom might open in Delhi later this month.

Say hello to this new Tesla Model Y

Before the official launch, five Tesla Model Y SUVs have already landed in Mumbai. These cars were shipped all the way from Tesla’s Shanghai factory. Each car was declared at around ₹27.7 lakh, but because India has high import taxes (around 70%), the price jumped up by another ₹21 lakh per car. So don’t be surprised if the final price crosses ₹50 lakh.

In the US, the Model Y starts at around $44,990 (roughly ₹37 lakh), but here in India, the price will be much higher due to taxes and other Transport and duty charges.

Why did Tesla take so long to enter India?

It wasn’t easy for Tesla to come to India. The company had been asking the Indian government to reduce import taxes on electric cars for a long time. Tesla wanted duty cuts of up to 70% for cars under $40,000 and 100% for more expensive models. But the Indian government said no special treatment will be given to just one company.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal made it clear: any EV policy will be for everyone, not just Tesla. The focus is on building an eco-friendly electric vehicle market for the whole country.

Many people were hoping Tesla would set up a factory here. But for now, the company is only focusing on showrooms and direct sales. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said Tesla is not planning to manufacture cars in India at this stage. Maybe in the future, if the market responds well and policies improve, we might see a Made-in-India Tesla too.

The launch is already creating a buzz on social media. Some influencers and media people have received exclusive invites for the opening. People are also spotting the Model Y on Mumbai roads, and it’s getting everyone excited.

There’s even talk that Elon Musk might attend the launch. Nothing is confirmed yet, but the speculation alone is enough to grab attention. The event’s PR is being managed by Laudco Media, a Gurugram-based company.

Tesla is entering a market where Indian companies like Tata Motors are already doing quite well in the EV space. Chinese brand BYD is also in the race. But Tesla has its own fan base and global image, which could give it an edge. However, the big question is, will Indians be willing to pay a high price for a Tesla?

For now, Tesla’s strategy seems slow and steady. Start with a few showrooms, understand the Indian market, and maybe manufacture here in the future.
