Spotify cuts the repeats to make shuffle actually feel random

New Delhi: Spotify has recently done one more update in its application by introducing its Shuffle experience for its free and premium users, which comes with the latest controls and redesigned default mode, which is generally aimed at reducing song repetition. The company has confirmed that the changes through its latest update are intended to keep playlists feeling fresh for the listeners across all its platforms. The newest system works, what changes users can expect, and how it compares with what Apple Music and YouTube Music, two of its leading competitors, currently offer to their users.

This latest upgrade focuses on the Shuffle’s behaviour, a feature central to how millions use the application daily. The newest default mode, called Fewer Repeats, takes a recent listening into account, reducing the chances of hearing the same track again too soon. Spotify has also stated that this leads to more varied and engaging sessions, especially on large playlists. Premium users get more granular control; they can now toggle off Smart Shuffle, a recommendation-driven mode, and manually choose between Fewer Repeats or Standard Shuffles in the Playback settings. Spotify has clarified that Standard Shuffle offers more randomness, which may surface the same songs more often. The platform is steering the users toward the latest default, arguing that it provides a better mix of familiarity and discovery.

Free and Premium listeners can also tap any song in shuffled playlists to play it next without the application reshuffling the entire queue. This small change gives users more control during casual listening. The Shuffle improvements come after the series of personalisation tools added this year, including the song exclusions in the Taste Profile, Snooze Controls, and Deeper genre exploration within the Discover Weekly. These features actually show Spotify’s broader push to give users tighter control over how recommendations shape their library. Spotify has also said that it will keep improving the Shuffle to improve variety and music discovery. There is no mention of the platform-specific rollout delays, so the update should be available globally.
