New Delhi: Qualcomm and MediaTek are gearing up for the new generation of their flagship smartphone processors (Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and MediaTek Dimensity 9600). Both mini-atom chipsets are anticipated for September 2026 releases, but there have been a few leaks that provide a flavor of what users can look forward to on their new mobile PCs.
An outstanding improvement is that both chips will run on what’s expected to be TSMC’s newest 2nm chip manufacturing process. This new technology should provide greater power efficiency, less heat generation, longer battery life, as well as higher overall performance.
The leaked details show that the processors will both feature a new 2+3+3 CPU configuration with two prime performance cores along with three high-efficiency and three performance cores. But there’s a crucial distinction that is key to both. Qualcomm is anticipated to be leveraging its own designed Oryon CPU cores, meanwhile MediaTek will be going with ARM’s newest-generation CPU cores. Further reports claim that Qualcomm’s chip also contains 16MB of L2 cache and 6MB of system-level cache for increased data processing speed.
Also expected to be better on both platforms is gaming performance, though non-sports are certainly not out of the question. According to rumors, the Grape 8 is supposed to have a new version of the Adreno 845 GPU with 12MB of dedicated GMEM graphics memory. It is also on the list to have Snapdragon Elite Gaming technologies and hardware-based ray tracing. The Dimensity 9600, on the other hand, might be fitted with ARM’s next-generation Immortalis GPU code-named “Magni.” Among its standout features is the possibility of compatible games being rendered at up to 60fps, then overlaid with the frame generation done on the hardware side to render the games at 120fps, with less latency than software solutions.
The memory and storage configuration of both flagship chips should support LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, enabling faster loading speeds for various apps, faster file transfers, and smoother multitasking.
Qualcomm may have its own edge in terms of connectivity as well. It is believed the Snapdragon X90 5G Modem, which will also come with 5G support and support AI processing, will be a part of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. It is reportedly capable of delivering maximum 5G download speeds of up to 15Gbps, which surpasses the speeds of the previous 5G generation. MediaTek has also been expected to offer enhanced connectivity for the Dimensity 9600, but specs have yet to be disclosed.
These specs have been based on leaks and not officially confirmed, but it looks like both of the processors could offer significant performance, gaming, battery, and AI enhancements. But this is expected to again intensify the competition between the two with the expected launch of both Qualcomm and MediaTek in September 2026, offering smartphone users even greater flagships than they already have.
