New Delhi: Qualcomm has announced its intention to acquire, an Israeli chipmaker that specializes in the development of chips for use in technology designed to prevent vehicle accidents. Autotalks has developed dedicated chips for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication technology, which can be used in both manned and driverless vehicles. The technology is designed to enhance road safety and smart transportation systems. As the automotive market matures, Qualcomm believes that a standalone V2X safety architecture will be needed to improve road user safety.

According to Nakul Duggal, Senior Vice President – Automotive at Qualcomm Technologies, “We have been investing in V2X research, development and deployment since 2017 and believe that as the automotive market matures, a standalone V2X safety architecture will be needed for enhanced road user safety, as well as smart transportation systems.”

The acquisition will be made through Qualcomm’s unit, Qualcomm Technologies. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. Qualcomm’s automotive business “pipeline” reportedly increased to $30 billion last year, up from $20 billion in late July, with the company citing the use of its Snapdragon Digital Chassis product by car makers and their suppliers as a key driver of growth. Snapdragon Digital Chassis provides in-car infotainment, cloud connectivity, and assisted and autonomous driving technology.

By integrating Autotalks’ solutions into the Snapdragon Digital Chassis product portfolio, Qualcomm will be able to enhance its offering to automakers and suppliers, and further strengthen its position in the automotive market. The acquisition is expected to support Qualcomm’s long-term strategy of developing technologies that enhance the safety and security of vehicles, as well as improve the overall driving experience.

Qualcomm’s acquisition of Autotalks is the latest example of the growing trend of consolidation in the chip-making industry. As the automotive market continues to expand, and demand for chips used in electric and autonomous vehicles increases, chipmakers are seeking to expand their product portfolios and strengthen their positions in the market. With the acquisition of Autotalks, Qualcomm will be able to provide automakers and their suppliers with a broader range of products and services, further solidifying its position as a leading player in the automotive market.
