New Delhi: Qualcomm’s next generation Oryon CPU delivers up to 5GHz of speed to push the performance ceiling for smartphone processors. This is the first-ever mobile CPU to hit 5GHz, the company states. Qualcomm will also release a new FlexCache design that will enhance CPU performance during heavy workloads, in addition to faster clock speeds.
The announcement may have sparked a new bout of competition against MediaTek Dimensity processors being stronger. MediaTek, for one, has come a long way in the flagship and premium smartphone chip segment, by challenging Qualcomm’s Snapdragon high-end platform with its Dimensity 9500. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 is currently ranked among the best smartphones processors in the industry.
5GHz Oryon CPU focuses on speed
The biggest highlight of Qualcomm’s new Oryon architecture is its 5GHz clock speed. But the speed of the clock is not the only factor to determine the processor’s speed. The new CPU also offers Qualcomm’s instruction per clock improvement (IPC), which is based on the number of instructions it can execute within a single clock cycle, or the amount of work done in each clock. This might enhance the load time, gaming, multi-tasking, and the performance of on-device artificial intelligence.
Another significant change is Qualcomm’s FlexCache technology. The system can dynamically distribute the available cache, rather than assigning fixed amounts to CPU cores. A simple explanation is that during periods of heavy workload, a core with little cache will be allocated additional cache, which should minimize delays and increase efficiency.
MediaTek Dimensity faces stronger competition
MediaTek has already proved itself as a Qualcomm equal at the high-end. The high performance and efficiency of the Dimensity 9500 are evident, and recent real-world testing has demonstrated that MediaTek’s flagship chips and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are comparable in performance in certain aspects.
With the new Oryon design, Qualcomm may thus exert greater pressure on MediaTek particularly regarding its single-core performance, gaming load and AI capabilities. That’s not all, however, that will determine the final outcome. GPU performance, optimum power usage, cooling and software optimisation will also be significant factors.
Smartphone users may face an even closer competition between Snapdragon and Dimensity processor chips as both companies move their chips to their highest level of performance. Qualcomm has thus a new powerful weapon in its arsenal with the 5GHz Oryon CPU, but it will be up to MediaTek to move the performance barrier.
