Privacy move or overreach? Chrome to revoke permissions automatically

New Delhi: Google Chrome experience if the users are using it on default settings, and if they are aiming for something, users need to tweak specific controls in the browser. In fact, it has useful features like Safety Check, allowing users to quickly check their online security and browse safely on the internet. The significant part about Chrome’s Safety Check is that users don’t have to use it manually, as it runs automatically in the background and finds where the browser needs their attention. The tool became more impressive than it was at launch when it gained the ability to review sites that send many notifications.

While this was a significant step towards helping users reduce the notification clutter on their devices, the Mountain View tech giant has now taken another clever step to tackle the issue. Google’s latest addition of the Safety Check features is revoking notification permissions from websites without the user’s consent. To identify which websites notifications need to be disabled, it will check for the sites that users have very low engagement with, but send many alerts. If it finds such websites, it will automatically revoke the notification permissions from them.

Chrome will notify users when it turns off those notifications, and users will be able to go to the Safety Check page in Settings to restore those permissions. Users need to fix them every time the browser revokes the consent if they don’t turn off the auto-revocation feature. Chrome notifies users when it turns off the notifications, but it hasn’t clarified what it qualifies as low engagement. So the users don’t want to miss notifications from certain websites, make sure users visit them frequently or turn off the feature.
