OpenAI launches always-on “Dots” agents, escalating enterprise rivalry with Meta

New Delhi: On Tuesday, OpenAI revealed its new always-on AI agents, dubbed Dots. The agents operate independently on apps to meet user requirements. The release is part of the company’s enterprise business strategy and puts it in competition with Meta to sell standalone AI.

The product was announced at OpenAI’s developer day in San Francisco. This was also a chance to get more competitive business and consumer exposure and highlights the company’s newfound momentum since the introduction of its Astra model.

Dots can execute tasks on OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model and adapt to project changes, such as changes in a customer’s requirements, or create a functional prototype to show someone for feedback. Users can communicate with the agents using the Slack and Teams platforms, while the agents can use OpenAI’s Codex and ChatGPT Work tools to research, analyze data, create documents and write code. They run on their own cloud based computer and are attached to over 4,000 applications. OpenAI says they can monitor Slack for bugs, translate designs into functional apps, and conduct proactive, read-only research while users are not in the office.

The company announced other products in addition to Dots. These encompass ChatGPT Space, an area of shared work for business teams, a more budget-friendly version (GPT-6.1 Sol), and a Pro plan that will cost $500 and will have more usage and faster performance limits.

The timing is a result of growing competition. Interest is rising in autonomous agents, following the release of Meta’s Muse agent earlier this month that reached millions of downloads, rattling the share prices of companies viewed as potential winners or losers in using such agents. While OpenAI is offering Dots to paying business users on its Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans, Meta’s Muse will aim to reach billions of consumers via its apps. On Sept 28, Meta also announced the launch of an enterprise platform to offer its models and agents to corporate clients.

OpenAI is based on enterprise. It currently serves approximately 40% of its revenues with business clients. The growth is critical as the firm will invest tens of billions of dollars in the AI data centers and needs to match its competitors like Anthropic and Meta.

Security is a continuing worry for corporate purchasers. In recent months, several tech leaders have expressed that certainty that AI companies not retain their data, particularly within regulated industry sectors such as healthcare and finance. OpenAI highlighted the security measures it has implemented for Dots Tuesday.
