New Delhi: Ex-CEO of Apple John Sculley has recently given a statement, in which he said that the Cupertino giant is facing a threat from OpenAI in the AI race. John Sculley insists that it is the first time in many decades that Apple has faced a real competitor. The former Apple chief was referring to Apple’s current position in AI compared to firms like OpenAI. So far, the Cupertino giant has struggled to get up to speed with AI, with the persistent issues and delays with Apple Intelligence. Apple barely even spoke of AI during the awe-dropping event in September this year.
John Sculley states that AI has not been a particular strength for them. John Sculley was at the helm of Apple for a decade between 1983 and 1993. While he had a strained relationship with Steve Jobs, who left the company in 1985, he helped popularise the Mac brand. John Sculley previously launched the Pepsi Challenge campaign in the US. The world of smartphones is run by applications, be it social media, video streaming, messaging; everything they do is dictated by the applications that their phone has. Apple has succeeded with the massive ecosystem built around the iPhone. However, John Sculley insists that times are changing, with AI transforming the landscape.
OpenAI has only been a software company with no real hardware products. However, the AI firm has major plans, and it acquired Jony Ive’s startup this year for $6 billion. Jony Ive is a former Apple designer who played a pivotal role in designing Apple’s biggest products, including the iPhone and the iMac. Jony Ive is tipped to be working on an AI device at OpenAI, though the project has faced delays.
