New Delhi: The relationship between Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and X (formerly Twitter), has always been a mix of teamwork and tension. Recently, some of their online conversations have caught a lot of attention. These talks brought out both their past issues and a hope for peace between them. Everything started when an old social media post from 2016 popped up again, and it reopened discussions about their views on politics and the future of artificial intelligence (AI).
It all began when a 2016 post by Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator, came back into the spotlight. In the post, Graham praised Altman for speaking out against Donald Trump. Back then, Altman had simply replied, “Thank you, Paul.” Years later, Musk responded to that same post with a “thinking face” emoji. It looked like he was questioning Altman’s opinion from back then.
Altman didn’t ignore it. He replied by reminding Musk that both of them had made wrong judgments about Trump in the past. He even shared a 2022 article from The Guardian where Musk himself had said Trump should step away from politics. Altman pointed out that opinions change over time, saying, “We were both wrong, or at least I certainly was… but that was from 2016 and this was from 2022.”
After this back-and-forth, Altman took a more friendly approach. He posted in the same thread using a pleading face emoji and the two fingers touching emoji (which usually means a small request). He wrote, “Anyway, see you next week, let’s be friends. AGI too important to let a lil feud get in the way.” This showed that Altman wanted to put the fight aside because building powerful AI, like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), is a much bigger goal.
But Elon Musk didn’t fully back down. He again used the “thinking face” emoji on another old post of Altman, where Altman had said he would vote against Trump. It seems Musk still had some things to say about Altman’s past political views.
And it’s not just online drama, there’s also a legal side to this. Musk has actually filed a lawsuit against Altman, saying that OpenAI changed from a non-profit company to a for-profit one, and that wasn’t the original plan. This lawsuit has added more fuel to their rocky relationship.
At one point, Musk even made an offer to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion. That shows how serious and competitive he is about AI. In a funny twist, Altman replied by jokingly offering to buy Musk’s company X (formerly Twitter) for $9 billion. This playful exchange showed that even though they argue, there’s still some humor between them.
In the end, Altman seems to really want to move forward and leave the arguments behind. He believes that the mission of creating safe and powerful AI is more important than personal fights. Both Musk and Altman are key figures in the world of AI, Altman with ChatGPT and Musk with his AI chatbot Grok. If they ever decide to work together again, it could be a big deal for the future of AI and for the world.
