New Delhi: Recently, it has come to light that OpenAI and Jony Ive’s collaboration on the latest AI-powered device has run into technical hurdles. According to some reports, the gadget, which was set to be released in 2026, could potentially be delayed now. But there are many users who don’t even know why they have been delayed. The reason is that the device was intended to be palm-sized without a screen that can take audio and visual cues from its physical surroundings and then perform the tasks based on its user’s requests.
However, the team is dealing with some of the challenges around the privacy matters, the personality of the device, and the high computational requirements, which were pushing budgetary restrictions. Some sources have told the outlet that the gadget would have a default switch on the approach despite the team not wanting that. OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s hardware startup, io, for $6.5 billion earlier in May. It was reported that OpenAI had signed a deal with Apple supplier Luxshare to manufacture the device.
There are other critical unresolved issues, including the assistant’s personality, which is reflected in the assistant’s voice and mannerisms. The goal is to have an invaluable, non-intrusive friend who’s computer, steering clear of the pitfalls of the wired AI girlfriend or the limited functionality of the past smart speakers like the Amazon Echo. The most substantial challenge cited by those close to the project is the immense demand for computing power.
