Apple’s newest on-device AI model, AFM Core Advanced, is limited to just three iPhone models: the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the iPhone Air.
They said as much during WWDC 2026 and doubled down on it in the Siri AI press release. The reason? You need 12GB of RAM to run the model, which chews through a huge 20 billion parameters. Most recent iPhones—like the iPhone 16 Pro and even the regular iPhone 17—just don’t have enough muscle. Those devices will stick with the more modest 3-billion-parameter AFM Core model instead.
So, what do you get with this advanced AI? Only two things, at least for now. First, you can really play with Siri’s voice: not just picking among presets, but actually tweaking how she (or he) sounds—adjusting speed, changing enthusiasm levels, and making the voice more personalized. Every other iPhone still gets Siri, just without these customization tools. Second, advanced dictation gets a boost. The bigger model makes speech-to-text smoother and more reliable—handy if you’re someone who talks to your phone a lot.
Most of the other Apple Intelligence stuff announced at WWDC 2026 won’t be limited this way. So, unless you need those two upgrades, you’re not really left behind. Apple’s language around “expressive voices and more advanced dictation” hints more hardware-only features could show up later, but for now, that’s where the line is drawn. The reason for all this boils down to hardware. The 20-billion-parameter model is just bigger, needs more RAM and more power. The three premium phones have 12GB and can handle it; the rest simply can’t.
Sure, in theory, the big model means faster, richer AI processing on the device itself—especially for tasks that like a lot of context. But for regular, daily stuff? You probably won’t feel a dramatic difference. A bit faster at app switching here and there, maybe. Dictation’s better and the custom Siri voices are nice, but that’s about it today.
So, should you worry if your phone doesn’t make the cut? Not really. As long as your iPhone works with Apple Intelligence, you’ll still get the majority of new features from WWDC 2026. The only group missing out are the folks who want the most control over Siri’s voice, or absolutely need the best dictation quality. For most things—asking for directions, getting summaries, or using other smart features—the experience is pretty similar.
That said, if you want the most “future-proof” phone, or you like having every possible feature on day one, you’ll have to shell out for the 17 Pro, Pro Max, or Air. Apple’s wording leaves the door open for more features that only work with AFM Core Advanced, so there’s a chance this feature gap grows down the road.
To sum it up: AFM Core Advanced gives iPhones a much bigger and smarter AI brain, but right now, it mostly means you get fancier Siri voices and better dictation if you have the new hardware. Most iPhone users won’t notice a big change. Unless you really care about those specifics, your current or slightly older iPhone is probably just fine. If you do want the best on-device Siri or you’re a dictation die-hard, those three top-tier models are your only option for the big league AI right now.
