New Delhi: Krutrim, the AI venture led by Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder of Ola, unveiled its base large language model (LLM) named Krutrim, entering the competitive field dominated by Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Krutrim is unique for being built with the largest representation of Indian data, catering to generative AI applications for all Indian languages. Developed by a team of computer scientists in Bengaluru and San Francisco, Krutrim will power a conversational AI assistant fluent in multiple Indian languages.
Aggarwal emphasized the significance of India’s cultural diversity, stating that existing LLMs, predominantly trained in English, fail to capture the nuances of India’s multicultural and multilingual context. He expressed the vision of India becoming a global leader in AI with an AI-first economy, contributing to improved labour and capital productivity, technological advancements, and cultural expression. Krutrim, meaning “artificial” in Sanskrit, encompasses a family of LLMs, including Krutrim base and Krutrim Pro, offering multimodal capabilities and technical advancements.
Aggarwal highlighted the India-first cost structure of Krutrim and its potential to make India the most productive and empowered economy globally. The AI computing stack will be deployed within Ola Group companies by March, facilitating voice chat, sales calls, and customer support emails and aiding Aggarwal in tasks like writing performance reviews and composing job descriptions.
