New Delhi: Microsoft has reiterated its rule against American police using advanced AI for recognizing faces through Azure OpenAI Service. This is a tool Microsoft offers for businesses to use OpenAI’s technology. The updated rules now clearly say that police in the U.S. can’t use this service to recognize faces. They can’t use it on things like body cameras or dashcams either. This rule applies worldwide.
This came after a company called Axon said they’d use OpenAI’s tech to summarize what’s said on body cameras. Some people worry about mistakes this kind of AI might make, like getting things wrong or being unfair to certain groups of people. We don’t know if Axon was using Azure OpenAI Service, but this rule update might be because of their announcement.
However, Azure OpenAI Service still lets police in other countries use it, and they can still use facial recognition with cameras in places like offices. This fits with what Microsoft and OpenAI have been doing lately. OpenAI is working with the Pentagon, and Microsoft wants to help the Department of Defense with AI too. They’ve made this service available for government use, promising to follow rules set by the Department of Defense.
