Microsoft finally ditches the blue screen of death: Here’s what’s next

New Delhi: Microsoft has finally announced some relief news for users who faced the Blue Screen of Death on their desktop. It’s one of the most iconic error messages in Windows history. The tech giant stated that replacing the infamous Blue Screen of Death with a more modern, simplified user interface will enhance readability and align better with Windows 11 design principles.

The Blue Screen of Death has been around for almost 40 years and will soon be replaced with a minimal-looking black screen of death featuring no emojis and a QR code. Since the Windows 1.0 days, the infamous Blue Screen of Death has undergone numerous visual and other changes, but this is the first time in the last couple of decades that the company is introducing a significant redesign to the Windows error page.

Microsoft has hinted that it was testing the latest look for the iconic Blue Screen of Death. The latest simplified Black Screen of Death displays an error message stating that your device has encountered a problem and needs to restart, resembling the screen a user typically sees during a Windows update. The tech giant has also moved the stop code and the name of the system driver that caused the crash to the bottom of the screen.

This is an attempt to clarify and provide better information, allowing us and our customers to identify the core of the issue so we can fix it more efficiently. The latest Black Screen of Death will be coming with the Windows update sometime later this summer. Part of Microsoft’s Windows Resiliency Initiative, the move comes after last year’s Crowdstrike incident, a security software update that caused more than 8 million Windows PCs to crash with the Blue Screen of Death.

The tech giant is also working on making these unexpected restarts less disruptive with its upcoming Quick Machine Recovery feature, which can help PCs boot up after an unsuccessful restart. It will also be available as part of an upcoming Windows update.
