Goodbye Skype, Microsoft bids a final farewell to the trusted App in 2025

New Delhi: Microsoft officially closed down Skype on May 5, 2025, this is a huge shift since Skype used to be among the most used apps for video calls and online conversations. Microsoft is now concentrating entirely on Microsoft Teams, which will be the new app for both personal and professional communication.

Skype came out in 2003 and became extremely popular for internet (VoIP) video and voice calls. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, and for quite a number of years, everybody across the globe used it, particularly before WhatsApp and Instagram became popular. However, with time, fewer individuals used Skype. By 2023, only around 36 million people were using it on a regular basis.

Why the Change?

In February 2025, Microsoft announced that it would discontinue Skype to keep things simple and pace with what people need today. Teams is already growing rapidly and offers more features for fun and work. Rather than having two apps, Microsoft will now just concentrate on Teams.

Microsoft has made moving from Skype to Teams easy. You can log into Teams using your Skype account, and your chats, contacts, and call history will move there automatically.

If you still have Skype Credits or a paid plan, don’t worry, you can use them until your current plan ends. After that, Skype won’t be available anymore. Also, if you want to keep your chat history and contacts but don’t want to move to Teams, Microsoft lets you download your data.

One important thing: Skype for Business is not going away. Only personal Skype accounts are being closed.

What’s Cool About Teams?

Teams isn’t just another Skype, it has more tools. You can:

  • Make one-on-one or group video calls
  • Chat and share files
  • Use a calendar and even join communities, it’s a mix of Skype, Google Meet, and WhatsApp, great for school, office, and friends.

Other options if you don’t like teams

If you don’t want to use Teams, here are some good apps:

  • Google Meet: Free with a Google account, lets you add up to 100 people and share your screen. Free calls last 60 minutes.
  • Zoom: Very popular for online classes and meetings. You can chat, share screens, record meetings, and more.

Netizens’ Reactions:

After the news about Skype shutting down, many people online shared emotional posts and memories. Some felt nostalgic, remembering how they used Skype to talk to friends and family during school days or the lockdown. There were also lots of funny memes, with users joking that Skype had been sleeping while Zoom and Teams took over. While some were confused about what happens to their credits, most users simply thanked Skype for being part of their lives and said goodbye with a mix of sadness and humor.

For users in India and around the world, this feels like the end of an era. But Microsoft is making the switch smooth and Teams has lots of new features. Just make sure to move your Skype data before January 2026, or it will be deleted forever.
