Meta responds to Instagram ad controversy in India highlights child safety measures

New Delhi: In response to recent reports of child sexual abuse, consumers in India allegedly being targeted by Instagram ads, Meta has been quick to issue a statement. Meta has weighed in on recent reports promoting the dissemination of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) via Instagram ads in India. The company is reporting strongly with regards to allegations that it knowingly ran or targeted such ads, stating that the company has “very strong policies and advanced systems in place to prevent this kind of harmful content from appearing on its platforms.

This was brought up because some of the Instagram ads in India were allegedly in violation of Meta’s guidelines against child exploitation. The Indian government also noticed and requested the company to instantly take down such posts, along with providing an explanation for the incident.

Meta has, in response, declared that it has a zero-tolerance approach to child exploitation and all kinds of child sexual abuse images. The company says its systems are configured to catch and block such content before it reaches the user. Meta also explained the ongoing collaboration between police and social media platforms, child protection organizations and editors to combat child abuse online.

The company says it’s using AI and automated detection software, as well as special teams for review, to identify and remove harmful content. These systems have a feature that can analyze text, images, videos, and ads for violations of policies. It also punishes accounts that continue to break its policies for child safety protocols and notifies authorities when there is a serious breach of child safety, Meta said. Meta has said it will strive to enhance its technology to continue to detect harmful content and prevent child exploitation on its platforms. It filters suspicious accounts, eradicates offending ads, and provides organizations that are dedicated to protecting children online with vital information, the company said. It additionally works together with other tech companies on the landscape to battle illegal information on multiple fronts.

The company also said it “withstood” and “dismissed” such ads “categorically,” suggesting it did not intentionally let or encourage such ads. Meta has reported that it doesn’t benefit from toxic content and that it is dedicated to keeping its platforms safe for everyone, particularly children and teens.

The controversy has been stirring up concerns related to the effectiveness of the giant social media sites’ systems for advertisement tracking and malicious material. While AI tools have enhanced the process of content moderation, they are no guarantee of perfection, and there is a need for ongoing surveillance and rapid response. Meta will work with the Indian police during the investigation and improve its monitoring and takedown of child exploitation content. Safeguarding kids is still one of the core values the firm has, and it will strive to keep on improving safety technologies, practices, and enforcement, the company stated.
