Messenger desktop apps to be discontinued: What users need to know

New Delhi: Meta has recently announced that it will officially discontinue its most well-known Messenger desktop application for the Mac and Windows on December 15, 2025, and after this date, users will be redirected to the Facebook website to access the messaging. Now, there are many users who have raised questions, and some of the users don’t even want to know why they are doing this, but this move also marks the end of the dedicated desktop experience for Messenger, which has been available as a native application for several years.

As per some sources, users will start receiving in-application notifications about the shutdown, with a 60-day window to transition before being blocked from using the application. Meta is also going to urge users to delete the desktop application of Messenger once it becomes unusable for them. If users visit the support page, they read, “The Messenger application for Mac is being deprecated after deprecation, you won’t be able to log into this application, and it will be automatically redirected to use the Facebook website for messaging to anyone.”

The decision to discontinue this Messenger application for the Mac and Windows was made because of Meta’s earlier transition to the Progressive Web App in September 2024, signaling a broader shift toward a browser-based experience for users, with a smooth experience on that. Windows users can still see the Facebook desktop application, and both Mac and Windows users are now able to access Messenger through the Facebook website on a browser.

The decision of Meta to shut down the Messenger application might disappoint the users who prefer the convenience of the dedicated desktop application, especially for multitasking and work-related communication. Meta also says that the web version will be available to support core features, including encrypted messaging and media sharing, and users will also be able to do this for some time, but after discontinuing it, it will be a waste for them.
