New Delhi: MediaTek has just announced another chip set officially. Just a few days after releasing the Dimensity 9600 Pro, it has revealed the availability of a second processor, the Dimensity 9600M that would be used to power many more recently released flagship devices with the same smarts.
Upon examining the hardware, the 9600M is no different from the design of the 9600. It uses the same 3nm manufacturing process by TSMC, and it’s essentially the same Dimensity 9500 from last year, with the same components used. It carries over the CPU configuration of having an all-large core processor, with the fastest core at up to 4.21GHz. The graphics chip and the AI processing chip are also unchanged.
Although the hardware itself is very similar to last year’s version, the new chip has some added value. It’s equipped with MediaTek’s latest Agentic AI Engine and Dimensity Scheduling Engine as well, to enable it to excel in AI-driven tasks. In theory, it can feature high-speed LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4.1 storage and Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 support and can accommodate up to 320 mega-pixel camera sensors and can record very sharp 8K video.
The first phones powered by Dimensity 9600M are expected later this quarter, and the vivo X500 and Oppo Find X10 are likely to be some of the first phones to feature the chip.
That, however, is not everyone’s opinion. Some internet users have complained that it’s a rehash of the old chip, and it will likely be more expensive, but not much more. It’s a practice that MediaTek has been doing quite a bit of the past few years, and is one that is quoted as being done too much by them lately.
But for consumers, the new 9600M perhaps offers a middle ground: It can apply some of the newer AI capabilities to phones that aren’t necessarily the priciest Dimensity 9600 Pro.
