June Android update enhances security and personalization features

New Delhi: Google has started rolling out the June Android Drop by bringing a mix of the latest safety, personalization, and productivity features to Android users. Many of the upgrades were first previewed at Google’s I/O developer conference last month and are now making their way to supported devices. New release unveils scam call detection in the Phone application, extended shopping capabilities with Circle to Search, digital wardrobe feature in Google Photos, and easier file sharing between Android devices and iPhones. Google has started to add the latest safety tools for children and teenagers, alongside AI-powered reading assistance in Google Play Books.

The latest security feature can detect when scammers attempt to impersonate someone from the user’s contact list. This feature, available via Phone by Google on Android 12 and later devices, can use encrypted RCS signals to verify whether a call is genuinely coming from a contact’s device. Verification fails, and the contact’s device confirms it is not making a call, the users will receive an on-screen warning that the call might be fraudulent. This feature will begin rolling out globally this month, starting with the Pixel devices.

Scammers are rising by moving more beyond calls from unknown numbers and are now impersonating trusted contacts to deceive users. Fradusters often combine caller ID spoofing, which makes calls appear to come from a familiar number, with the AI-generated voice clones that can mimic family members, employers, or other trusted individuals.

The shopping capabilities of Circle to Search enable the users to identify an entire outfit from clothing in a single image. This recent feature can recognize multiple items at once, including clothing, footwear, and accessories, making it easier for users to find similar products without switching between other applications.

Google Photos will soon gain the latest wardrobe feature that automatically catalogs clothes appearing in the user’s photo library. The tool will create a digital closet by making it easier to browse outfits, save style ideas, and plan clothing combinations.

The company is also adding more safety features to the Personal Safety application for the younger users. Children under the age of 13 will be able to store medical information and emergency contacts on their phone’s lock screen, making it easier for first responders or others to access important details during an emergency. It will also be able to turn on car crash detection, which can automatically contact emergency services and notify selected contacts if an accident is detected. Google is also expanding access to features such as Safety Checks and real-time location sharing. These tools enable users to share their location with trusted contacts and let family members know they have reached their destination safely.

Latest feature called as Book Insights to Play Books. Readers will be able to access summaries of previous chapters via the Catch me up option and ask questions about characters, themes, or context while reading. This feature is initially rolling out for select English-language titles by including thousands of free books. AirDrop-style file sharing via Quick Share on the Pixel 10 series before expanding support to the Pixel 9 series. Google is now expanding support further by bringing easier cross-platform file sharing to more Android devices.
