New Delhi: Tesla has been planning to enter the Indian market for a long time, but things are not going as smoothly as everyone hoped. Even though Tesla tested its cars here and showed a lot of interest, some problems like global sales issues and India’s rules have made things quite tricky.
Sales Drop:
Tesla’s money situation in the first quarter of 2025 has affected its India plans a lot, the company saw a 20% fall in its revenue and a huge 71% drop in its net profit. Because of this, Tesla said it won’t spend money on new factories unless it sells around 30 lakh vehicles every year. Right now, Tesla’s global sales are about 17.8 lakh vehicles, which means reaching 30 lakh will take some time.
Because of these problems, Tesla is now thinking twice before expanding in India. It looks like global EV companies like Tesla won’t set up new factories here unless India brings in more supportive policies.
India’s EV Policy
The Indian government is working on a new electric vehicle (EV) policy that could lower import duties for companies like Tesla, but only if they invest in India. However, the policy details are still not clear, and it’s confusing whether making cars locally will be a must or not.
People close to the industry believe that Tesla is waiting to see the full policy before taking any big steps. Tesla is especially worried about India’s high import taxes, which can go up to 100%. These taxes make Tesla cars super expensive for Indians, which makes it harder to sell them. Until there is a clear rule about duties and manufacturing, Tesla will probably just wait and watch.
Even with all these issues, Tesla hasn’t given up on India. Its Model Y SUV has been seen being tested on Indian roads, showing that they are still interested. There are also talks that Tesla might launch cheaper models specially designed for India whenever they officially start.
Tesla’s delay in coming to India could also affect other international EV companies that are thinking about investing here. Right now, the unclear rules and high taxes are big problems for everyone in the EV industry.
