New Delhi: The iPhone users received big news from Apple recently. The iOS 18.3 update through SpaceX’s Starlink partnership enables users to exchange text messages in areas without cellular coverage.
The text messaging feature via satellite operates under current testing conditions that began in December. Only the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and S24 Android 15 operating system could initially access this feature. So far this feature becomes accessible only to selected T-Mobile subscribers in the United States. The beta testers have received notice through notifications to begin satellite text messaging from any location.
Users need to install the latest iOS 18.3 system on their iPhone before accessing the satellite text messaging feature. The new updated software adds a satellite messaging option that can be enabled through the cellular data settings. The current text message support from this service represents an outstanding change for users living in remote areas and weak signal regions.
The satellite communication feature at Apple will receive additional expansions down the line. The satellite communication feature could receive further updates through Apple to include voice calling and data services which would enhance its usefulness for remote area travelers. Apple pursues these changes through their effort to enable users stay connected regardless of their physical location.
Due to its entry into the Indian market Starlink needs to complete particular legal requirements alongside its technological setup. According to Indian regulations the company must store user data within the country boundaries and provide access to authorities when needed.
Apple is working closely with T-Mobile and Starlink to bring this feature to select iPhones. If you have a compatible model running iOS 18.3, you can activate Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell function in your settings. This will let you send basic text messages from remote locations to friends, family, or emergency responders.
To connect to Starlink, you’ll need to install the iOS 18.3 update. Once it’s installed, go to your cellular data settings, and you’ll see a toggle to turn on satellite messaging. Like with other satellite services, you might have to point your phone toward the sky to get a signal.
Right now, the feature is only available in the U.S., but Apple and Starlink have plans to expand it further, this can be a big step forward in mobile connectivity, especially for people who often find themselves in areas with no signal and less connectivity specially in rural areas and hilly regions.
