Instagram tests ‘Instants’ to boost temporary sharing trend

New Delhi: Instagram has recently reported that it is experimenting with a new application called Instants for casual photo sharing. This application will enable users to take quick photos and share them with friends that can only be viewed once, and it will remain accessible for up to 24 hours.

It is now available in selected regions, including Spain and Italy. The idea is to provide a low-pressure way to connect, without the need for editing or perfect-looking posts.

Users can also take a photo with a single tap by using the in-app camera and share it instantly. But there is no option to upload from the camera roll, and editing tools are limited apart from adding text; photos cannot be modified.

Unlike the main Instagram application, which is often associated with curated content, Instants focuses on raw, real-time sharing. Photos disappear after being viewed once, and they will stay available for almost 24 hours, adding a sense of urgency and privacy to interactions.

Users can choose to share these instants with the mutual followers or the Close Friends list. These lists are been synced with the main Instagram, so there is no need to set them up once again. Instagram is also experimenting with Instants both as its standalone application and as a feature within the main application, by offering users flexibility.

This approach is similar to platforms like Snapchat and BeReal, which focus on unfiltered and temporary content. It also reflects a shift away from heavily edited posts towards more spontaneous sharing.
