New Delhi: On average, Indian users spend more than three hours on social media and about 46 minutes on online gaming per day, as per the new report.

According to the technology policy think tank Esya Centre, social media has the largest daily engagement in terms of time spent at 194 minutes, while OTT (over-the-top) and online gaming come in at 44 and 46 minutes, respectively.

A median user spends less than Rs 100 monthly and less than an hour daily on online gaming. For OTT, the corresponding number is Rs 200-400.

The report included a survey of 2,000 respondents and was further supported by in-app data from more than 20.6 lakh users spanning across 143 mobile applications.

“We believe that the findings of the report are very relevant, especially at a time when the Government is in the process of formulating user-centric policies for the digital industries,” said Amjad Ali Khan, Director at the Esya Centre.

Additionally, users said that a 30% increase in participation fees for online games might lead to a 71% dip in engagement, indicating a high price sensitivity. The report said OTT would only account for 17% of this figure.

While OTT is a significant stress buster, 28% of Digital Nagriks consider online gaming important for their employment prospects.

“While technology is dynamic, consumption patterns are more predictable. Therefore, building a profile of Digital Nagrik and its consumption patterns can form the crux of an agile policy ecosystem for the three sectors. An attempt our report aims to make,” said Rajat Sharma, Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

While every user uses social media once a month, the corresponding number for OTT and online gaming are 60% and 40%, respectively, according to reports.

On social media, about 89 per cent of users are active daily, while only 22% and 12% are active on OTT and online gaming, respectively.
