New Delhi: Google is now making things more exciting on their most rumoured extended reality XR with the Project Aura, the first AI smart glasses that will run on Android XR. The launch of the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, Google has also showcased Project Aura, by giving users a glimpse of how the headset will run before it is launched next year. This Project Aura is being developed in partnership with Xreal, aiming to combine the practicality of daily wear glasses with immersive digital experiences. This preview signals Google’s intention to compete with the established players in the XR and smart glasses segment using its familiar Android ecosystem.
The Project Aura resemble a set of chunky sunglasses, but with the cord attached to a battery pack, which also doubles up as the trackpad. Google also refers to the handset as a set of wired XR glasses. The smart glasses run on Android XR, the same operating system as the recently launched Galaxy XR headset from Samsung. This enables the Project Aura to run any application or feature that was designed for the Galaxy XR without the need for the developers to build the application specifically for the smart glasses. This can be particularly useful for Android XR as a whole, as the developers can create one application and have it run on all the devices that run on this platform.
Project Aura highlights the feature, which includes a 70-degree field of view and optical see-through technology. The glasses overlay digital content directly into the user’s line of sight, enabling activities like following recipe videos or accessing in-context visual guides while staying aware of physical surroundings. The experience is closer to the portable workspace, with the multiple windows and real-time assistance, rather than traditional augmented reality overlays. Cross-platform compatibility is a primary focus; the upcoming Android XR glasses will support iOS, offering the whole Gemini AI experience for iPhone users.
