New Delhi: Google is testing out a fun new feature for its Gboard keyboard app, an AI-powered meme maker called “meme studio.” The idea is to make creating memes super simple, whether you want to do it yourself or let AI handle it. While the concept is exciting, early tests show it still needs a lot of work before it’s ready for prime time.
The meme studio comes with two modes. First, there’s a manual mode where you can pick from a small selection of base images or upload your own. You can then add captions and tweak their position, size, and angle. But the editing tools are pretty basic, you can’t change the font or text color, which limits how creative you can get.
The second mode uses AI to create memes for you. You type in a prompt (or choose from preset ones), and the AI pairs an image with a caption that’s supposed to match. This all happens on Google’s servers, so you’ll need an internet connection. Sounds cool, but the results? Not so much.
People testing the AI mode say the memes it makes often don’t make sense, aren’t funny, and sometimes the caption doesn’t even match the image. It’s another example of how hard it is for AI to capture humor and cultural references like humans can.
Another issue is the design. The meme editor looks a bit outdated and doesn’t offer much flexibility. You’re stuck with one font and no way to change colors or use popular meme styles. That might turn off younger users who are used to more stylish, feature-rich meme apps. On top of that, Google’s content filters are very strict, sometimes blocking harmless prompts, so users feel even more limited.
It’s also unclear who this tool is really for. Older users who want a quick and easy way to make simple memes might find it fun. But younger users, who are already using advanced apps, probably won’t be impressed. And with the AI memes being hit-or-miss (mostly miss), it’s hard to see it becoming popular in its current state.
Despite the current flaws, this feature has potential. If Google improves the customization options, makes the AI smarter and funnier, and loosens the filters a bit, meme studio could actually become a fun and useful tool. But for now, it’s more of an interesting idea than a must-have feature.
