Google warns Gmail users massive hack threat puts billions at risk

New Delhi: Google recently issued a critical security warning to all their 2.5 billion Gmail users, urging them to update their passwords due to a spike in successful hacking attempts by hackers, and the company has strongly recommended the activation of two-step verification and other protective measures to safeguard the accounts of users. The hacking group ShinyHunters, which has been inspired by the Pokémon franchise, has been active since 2020 and is tied to significant data breaches at companies like AT&T, Microsoft, Santander, and Ticketmaster.

Hackers often use phishing emails to deceive users into visiting fake login pages or revealing sensitive details, such as the 2SV codes. The compromised data in this incident was publicly available. Google cautions that all of these tactics could be escalated into more targeted and severe attacks. Google emailed all the potentially affected users advising them to enhance their account security. The Two-step verification, also known as two-factor authentication or multi-factor authentication, requires secondary confirmation, such as a code sent to a trusted device.

Two-step verification can usually be found in the security settings of the users ‘ accounts. Sometimes it is called as the two factor authentication or the multi-factor authentication, and this all of the protection are available for the most of the primary online services, such as the email, banking, and the social media platforms, so this was the urgent message for their all of the 2.5 billion users of Gmail, so be protected from this kind of hacking.
