Google reveals date for ‘The Android Show’ ahead of big event

New Delhi: Google has recently once again hosted its dedicated The Android Show event ahead of its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2026. Google has also confirmed that the upcoming The Android Show and I/O edition will take place on May 12, a week before I/O begins on May 19.

This event will be streamed online at 10 AM PT, and it is also expected to preview upcoming upgrades across Google’s hardware line, including Android devices, Android XR-powered headsets, and possibly a new Android-based platform for desktops.

Google might also highlight the Gemini-powered upgrades coming to its devices. This same approach was unveiled last year by splitting announcements between two events. Consumer-facing upgrades are expected to be revealed during The Android Show, while more technical and developer-aimed changes will be discussed during I/O.

One of the most highlighted points could be Android 17, which is already in the beta version. This upgrade is going to bring a mix of practical changes instead of major visual shifts. There are also small usability changes, such as a redesigned screen recording toolbar that lets users record the specific application instead of full screen.

It is also a sign of Android becoming more flexible on the larger screens, with better widget scaling and desktop-style features like interactive picture-in-picture windows.

Google might also unveil its long-term plans for a desktop-style Android experience. Google has already announced they are experimenting on the latest Android-based systems for PCs that will bring Android and Chrome OS together into a single platform, internally it is referred to as Aluminum OS.

Google is actively developing a unified platform for laptops and tablets, with Android at its core. AI is the main part of the system, with the deeper integration of Gemini expected. Google might bring its AI features, already seen on devices, to larger-screen devices like PCs.

Google first showed its display-based AI smart glasses at The Android Show: XR Edition on December 8 last year, by confirming partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. Prototype also included the subtle in-lens display that might show contextual details such as navigation directions and live translation captions. It also suggested that these smart glasses are expected to be unveiled sometime in 2026.
