New Delhi: Google Meet has started rolling out its latest speech translation feature to its Android and iOS devices, expanding the capability that was recently unveiled on the web. This feature allows the near real-time translation of spoken audio during meetings, by enabling the participants to hear conversations in another language as they happen.
This is specially designed to make communications easier for users who can speak different languages, in global or cross-regional meetings where language can often be a barrier.
This upgrade also enables the participants in the meeting to hear translated speech as someone talks, rather than relying only on captions or post-meeting summaries. This idea aims to reduce language barriers in the global meeting, especially for teams spread across regions.
This feature also supports bidirectional translation between English and five languages, such as Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian. Conversations can flow both ways between English and any one of these languages during the call. Only one language pair can be active in the meeting at a time.
Using conference room hardware, participants can listen to translated audio, but their own speech will not be translated. This feature is still evolving, with planned improvements to translation accuracy, tone, and overall user interface. Speech translation will be allowed by default.
Admins can choose to turn it on or off at the organizational unit level. End users can also access and use this feature directly within the Meet once it becomes available to their accounts.
