Google Maps adds Gemini AI for smarter search and 3D navigation

New Delhi: Google has officially unveiled its latest AI feature in its Google Maps, which is powered by its Gemini models, enabling users to ask more detailed and contextual questions directly within the application. This latest update also unveils the latest conversational features called Ask Maps, which are especially designed to help users search for places, plan trips, and get recommendations by using natural language queries.

Navigation in Google Maps is by shifting to the 3D view that Google calls Immersive Navigation. This latest feature is currently only available in the US. This latest Ask Maps feature enables users to ask complex, real-world questions that previously required multiple searches or manual browsing of reviews.

Ask Maps uses Google’s Gemini models together with the real-time mapping data to generate responses. These results also appear along with the customized map, which also shows relevant places and options based on the query.

The system also analyzes information from more than 300 million places listed in Maps, including reviews and contributions from the community of over 500 million contributors, to generate recommendations and travel suggestions.

Ask Maps can also respond to longer and more contextual questions, such as planning a road trip with recommended stops along the route. It also added that the responses can be personalized based on the user’s activity within the Maps, by including the places they have searched for or saved.

In this latest update, they have also introduced the Navigation experience in Google Maps. The latest Immersive Navigation system comes with redesigned visuals and more detailed route guidance. The updated navigation interface moves beyond the traditional 2D map view and comes with a more detailed 3D visual representation of the surroundings.

The map now shows the buildings, overpasses, and terrain alongside the route, with the transparent building visuals and smart zoom features, which are especially designed to help users see upcoming turns, lanes, and intersections more clearly.

This upgraded navigation system is also noticeable with details such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs, and it also offers extended route previews alongside revised voice navigation instructions. This feature also uses its Gemini models to analyze data from sources such as Street View imagery and aerial photos to generate a more accurate view of the road environment.
