Google Discover is going prompt-first, personalised feeds incoming

New Delhi: Google has been reported to they internally testing a new experimental feature called Tailor your feed for Google Discover, which lets users customise their content feed using natural and straightforward language prompts. According to some sources, the tool will enable people to directly tell Google what topics, formats or tones they want to see and what they want to avoid. This is stated to give users more control over the recommendations. Google Discover mainly relied on the user behaviour, such as searches, reading history and options like Not Interested, to adjust content.

Google is also moving beyond simple options like Not Interested by enabling users to customise Discover using natural language prompts. Users can ask for the specific topics, share goals or ongoing projects, adjust the tone of their feed, or block content they no longer want to see. The tool can also be used to refine the recommendations that the users already receive. Users can also customise formats and sources by requesting more videos, more content from the specific publisher, or even asking for a calmer and more relaxed overall feel to their Discover feed.

Google enables the follow-up prompts, and the users can refine their preferences through an ongoing conversation, just like other AI-based tools. Google also stated that Discover’s AI updates the feed instantly and remembers these preferences, which can be changed at any time—the history icon in the prompt box links to the user’s activity page. The feature is still in early testing and is currently limited to US English. Users can find it by opening the Google application and tapping the Labs beaker icon in the top left corner. After scrolling down to Tailor your feed and turning it on, Discover needs to be refreshed by swiping down.

Once it is enabled, users may see a Try now button or an option inside the overflow menu labelled Tailor your feed. Tapping this open prompt box with the short hint asking users to describe the type of content they want. A row of suggestion clips also appears at the top, including options such as Stop showing me navigate news.
