New Delhi: Google has recently stated it is on track to release its most-awaited Aluminium OS, the unified operating system based on the ChromeOS and the Android platform in 2026. Google still expects that Aluminium OS to arrive in 2026.
Google has also confirmed that not all of the devices are going to run ChromeOS will be able to upgrade to the upcoming operating system due to hardware specifications limits. Some of the older devices might not meet the technical requirements needed for the latest OS.
Google has also plans to enable upgrades for many of the latest devices wherever possible, and it will continue by supporting Chromebooks, noting that millions of students, consumers, and workers rely on them for everyday use.
The current Chromebooks are not compatible with the upcoming Aluminium OS, which actually means Google will need to continue supporting ChromeOS until at least 2033 in order to fulfil its 10-year update promise to existing users.
Google is expected to begin moving away from Chrome OS entirely. The platform might continue mainly to meet current obligations instead of playing a central role in Google’s long-term strategy. Google has also announced that Android for PC would arrive as part of its plan to merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform.
Aluminium OS is reported to be being developed with AI as a foundational element, pointing to tight integration with Google’s Gemini model.
Gemini has already allowed the advanced on-device AI features on the high-end smartphones, Google is now preparing to extend these capabilities to larger screen devices, moving beyond Chromebooks traditional focus on the entry-level segment.
Google is also preparing to support the wide variety of the hardware, such as laptops, detachable devices, tablets, and set-top boxes, across both budget and premium segments. Google also aims to position Aluminium OS as a competitor in the high-end PC space along with Windows and macOS, instead of restricting it to lower-cost devices.
