New Delhi: Japanese firm Fujifilm has announced it is to establish a large new facility in India. It plans to invest roughly ₹800 crore (USD 83 million) in constructing a new factory to produce components for the production of semiconductor chips. The plan aligns with India’s Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which aims to boost the growth of domestic chip manufacturing in India.
The project will take place in 2 phases. The first phase will start in 2026/27. This section of the plant will produce chemicals that will be used first in the chip-making process. Fujifilm hopes to begin the regular production of them by 2028.
In the second stage, the company will further expand its factory. It will begin to produce materials for clean and chip preparation, other high purity chemicals. This is a gradual phase that will be dependent on the market’s demand.
In this regard, Fujifilm has inked a deal with Tata Electronics to strengthen their supply of semiconductor materials for Tata’s upcoming semiconductor factory in Dholera, Gujarat. The new Fujifilm factory will be established in the same area of Dholera where materials can be easily brought to Tata’s factory. The two firms will also work together to train local Indian chemical manufacturers to make high purity chemicals for semiconductors.
This news comes at a time when Indian chip industry is rapidly expanding. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described computer chips as “digital diamonds” at an event called SEMICON India 2025 recently. India wants to emerge as a big player in the $1 trillion dollar global chip market, he said.
India has progressed from planning to constructing chip manufacturing facilities as of September 2026. At this moment, there are 12 semiconductor and display plants under construction in the country and their total investment is on the verge of $20 billion. Three factories have already kicked off production of chips for sale.
The government approved the new policy for Semiconductors Mission 2.0 in July 2026, and Fujifilm will avail the benefits of the policy. Fujifilm aims to aid older and newer kind of chip-ware technology by establishing chemical manufacturing in India. This new plant will also be linked to Fujifilm’s other factories throughout the world, including in Japan, the USA, Europe and East Asia.
