New Delhi: Since Elon Musk acquired the social media platform now known as X, the user base has seen little to no growth. According to a recent report by the Financial Times, X recorded approximately 251 million global daily active users in the second quarter of 2024. This figure represents a mere 1.6 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year.
Before Musk’s takeover in October 2022, the platform, then known as Twitter, experienced double-digit growth, consistently adding tens of millions of new users annually. In stark contrast, from Q2 2023 to Q2 2024, X added just over four million users.
A quarterly analysis of X’s user growth reveals an even bleaker picture, despite a seemingly positive spin on the situation. Since Musk privatized the company, it has not publicly disclosed daily active user numbers. However, Musk did share a graph in late November 2022, showing an increase of about five million daily active users in the month following his acquisition. The graph indicated that the platform had 254.5 million daily active users as of October 23, 2022, rising to 259.4 million by November 20, 2022.
Fast forward to Q2 2024, and the user base of 251 million daily active users is essentially where it was on October 16, 2022, just before Musk’s acquisition on October 28. In September 2023, X claimed to have 245 million daily active users, a figure released after CEO Linda Yaccarino stated at a conference that the platform had 225 million daily active users.
Despite the Financial Times’ report, X has not provided daily active user statistics to counter these claims, only disputing the report and asserting that “monthly users increased significantly in the US and UK between August last year and June this year.” However, no specific data was given.
On Tuesday, the official @XData account posted metrics such as “daily user seconds” and “daily video views,” but did not provide daily active user statistics, which are the industry standard for measuring growth. Based on available data, it appears that X has lost the daily active users gained post-acquisition, reverting to its pre-Musk 2022 numbers.
