New Delhi: Discord has officially introduce end-to-end encryption is now default enabled for all of the voice and video calls on the platform, expect Stage channels. Users no longer need to manually opt in, and encrypted calling is now standard across the direct messages, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams.
This move aims on improving privacy protections while maintaining the low-latency voice and video quality users expect from the platform. This rollout was part of multi-year effort that started in 2023, when the Discord first began testing with the encrypted protocol designed specifically for audio and video communication.
Discord later extended support across the web browser, gaming consoles, bots, applications, and its Social SDK before completing the migration in March 2026. Since March 2026, all voice and video calls across the platform has been end-to-end encryption automatically.
Discord also confirmed that it is removing support for unencrypted fallback connections, which means the users will no longer be able to switch back to unencrypted calls in the future. Stage channels remain the only exception because they are specially designed for broadcasting to larger public audiences such as live events and community town halls, instead of private conversations.
Discord has now encrypted voice and video calls by default, Discord stated that it currently has no plans to expand end-to-end encyrption to text messages. Its existing text-based features were built assuming messages were not encyrpted and redesigning those systems would require significantly engineering work. It will continue to investing in DAVE and strengthening privacy protections across the platform by moving forward.
